Capush: On stage with Microbe and Bhajis Loops
Name: Capush
Location: France
Genre: Eclectic Post-rock
Bhajis Loops/Microbe usage: On stage, or during rehearsals for the elaboration of songs
Can you tell us a bit about Capush and your approach of music?
Capush is a collective of three musicians, which is based on experimentation and artistic freedom. Besides the electronic parts we play the guitar, bass, drums, percussions and keyboards. In fact, we have used electronic instruments since our debut in 1999.
Our first machine was an amiga 500 - the audio samples were created, digitized, and then sequenced and put together in oktalyzer, a soundtracker. We progressively switched to the Mac with Vsamp, and then Ableton Live. We now play all the electronic parts during our live performances, with foot controllers and keyboards.
How did you come to use Microbe and Bhajis Loops?
Chienrouge (multi-instrumentalist and electronic musician) bought a Palm to manage our appointments and tour dates. He discovered that this machine could do much more! He instantly started searching on the internet for any possible kind of music creation program - and he found Bhajis Loops and Microbe. Considering the extraordinary superiority of these programs compared to the other applications available for PalmOS, the purchase decision was made only after a few hours of tests with the demo version.
How do you use the program? How is it integrated in your composition process and in your performances?
Microbe is used during the rehearsals, when we are improvising and experimenting with new ideas. Chienrouge also uses it on stage with Euroloop - a variable-sized collective of musicians.
Bhajis Loops is used to prepare and pre-compose our electronic parts, during rehearsals, tours or anywhere else - when inspiration strikes! Some sequences are also directly integrated in our set - we sample the output of the Palm on the Mac, and trigger the recorded samples from a MIDI controller in Ableton Live.
Finally, Chienrouge sometimes performs a short solo just with Bhajis Loops and his voice.
What are your favourite features?
We like the fact that we can use any audio sample - and that we are free to create our own sounds using samples or the synthesis functions. We also enjoy using the automation.
Generally speaking, the program is very fast and easy to use.
